HRBBA Program Overview

Hopkins Royals Boys Basketball Association (HRBBA) is a volunteer-run organization offering boys in 3rd - 8th grades a basketball program where they can develop skills and knowledge in a competitive atmosphere.

4th - 8th Grade Program

Team Formation

  • All registered players will go through tryouts and we will form as many teams as possible with between 8-10 players.

  • Teams are generally formed at the A/B/C level, “A” being the highest level of competition.

  • Per MYAS guidelines, player transfers are limited to ONE athlete per team for grades 3 and 4, and TWO athletes per team for grades 5-8.

  • Not all players will make a team.

Coaches

  • Program coaches are typically parent volunteers, however, in some instances, a paid coach will be hired.

  • Parent coaches will be coaching their child’s team.

  • Ideally, each team will have two coaches--a head coach and an assistant coach.

  • If you are interested in coaching, please reach out to the HRBBA Coaching Director at Coaching@HRBBAbasketball.net.

Practices

  • Beginning in mid-October until early March, 4th - 8th-grade teams will practice twice per week. Teams typically have a break over Hopkins Schools winter break.

  • 4th and 5th grade teams practice for 90 minutes, and 6th - 8th grade teams practice for 2 hours.

  • Practice times are affected by space availability and will typically be scheduled on weeknights.

  • Attendance at all scheduled practices is a team requirement. Conflicts must be discussed with the team coach in advance of any absence.

Games

  • All games for our 4th - 8th-grade teams are played in a tournament format and are hosted by various community basketball organizations in the Metro area. Visit our Tourney Schedule page for a complete listing.

  • 4th-grade teams play in fewer tournaments and therefore pay lower total fees.

  • Tournament weekends begin in early November and continue to mid-March.

  • Tournaments typically run from Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon with a minimum of 3 games per tournament.

  • 4th - 8th grade teams will usually participate in one out-of-town tournament (e.g., Rochester). HRBBA will hold a block of rooms at a hotel and families are responsible for reserving and paying for their own rooms.

Equipment/Uniforms

  • Registration fees cover the cost of personalized player uniforms (jersey and shorts) and warm-up shooting shirts, which the players get to keep.

  • Players will wear their uniforms for two years and will receive new shooting shirts every year. Families are responsible for paying for missing or outgrown jerseys and shorts if necessary.

3rd Grade Program

Team Formation

  • All registered players will go through tryouts, and HRBBA will field two types of teams at the 3rd grade level:

    • One competitive 3rd grade "Tournament Team" with between 8-10 players that will play a tournament-only schedule at the highest skill level (A/B/C) determined during the evaluation process. Parents will be prompted to "opt in" during the registration process for their player to be considered for the Tournament Team. Players who are not selected for the Tournament Team will be considered for one of the MYAS League teams. Pricing is available on our Registration page

    • As many additional 3rd Grade MYAS League teams as possible with between 8-10 players each and skill levels evenly balanced between the teams. Pricing is available on our Registration page.

  • Hopkins 2nd graders may try out for a 3rd grade team. HRBBA will not accept players below 2nd grade.

  • HRBBA will not accept transfers, residency waivers or "no opportunity" for players below 3rd grade. Per MYAS guidelines, player transfers are limited to ONE athlete per team for 3rd grade.

  • Teams are generally formed at the A/B/C level, “A” being the highest level of competition.

  • Not all players will make a team.

Coaches

  • 3rd Grade program coaches will be parent volunteers.

  • Parent coaches will be coaching their child’s team.

  • Ideally each team will have two coaches--a head coach and an assistant coach.

  • If you are interested in coaching, please reach out to the HRBBA Coaching Director at Coaching@HRBBAbasketball.net.

Practices

  • Beginning in early November until late February, all 3rd grade teams will practice twice per week for 90 minutes. Teams typically have a break over Hopkins Schools winter break.

  • Practice times are affected by space availability and will typically be scheduled on weeknights.

  • Attendance at all scheduled practices is a team requirement. Conflicts must be discussed with the team coach in advance of any absence.

MYAS League Teams

  • The 3rd Grade MYAS League Teams will participate in the MYAS 3rd Grade League with two “double header” games on six Saturdays as listed on the Tourney Schedule page.

  • MYAS aims to create leagues in multiple pockets around the Twin Cities, limiting travel for this age group.

  • MYAS League Teams will also play in up to two additional travel-style tournaments in the Metro area as listed on the Tourney Schedule page.

Equipment/Uniforms

  • MYAS League players will receive a warm-up shooting shirt to keep, and for games will wear HRBBA jerseys that will be returned at the end of the season.
